Class Book

The teacher will invite students to create a class book.

The children will be encouraged to share their favorite thing to play and asked a follow-up question, “What do you like best about _____?” or “Why do you like to play ______?” Each child will get one page with his or her picture. The teacher will write the child's dictation in the space provided.

 

For children who need additional support:

The teacher will suggest common children’s activities for children who may have a hard time expressing their favorite activity and reasons why they might like such activities if struggling to answer, “Why?”

 

For children who are ready for a challenge: 

Children will be invited to create an illustration to accompany their words rather than decorating the page.

 

ELL:

The students will be given directions in Spanish.


Pre-K Common Core Learning Standard Addressed: PK.SOC.1. Develops a basic awareness of self as an individual, self within context of group, and self as context of community.


Foundational text for the week: Wide Big World by Maxine Beneba Clarke


Questions that will be asked throughout the week related to the foundational text: 


Level 1: Recall

What does Izzy notice about Belle? What does Belle do? What are other things Belle describes in the story? Where does Belle say we can find differences?

 

Level 2: Skill/Concept 

 The book discusses differences we can find in nature. When we are outside, what are some things we can see that are from nature? Do the things you mentioned look different from each other? What is different about them? 

 

Level 3: Strategic Thinking 

What emotions is Izzy's face expressing at the beginning and end of the book? Do her feelings seem to change? Izzy learned that differences make us unique. What makes you unique? What are some things that What happened in the story that caused her feelings to change? Make our pre-k classroom unique?

 

Level 4: Extended Thinking 

In the book the teacher, Mr. Jay, says nature is smart. Why would he say nature is smart? In what ways do you think nature is smart? 


Learning Centers Available for the Unit: 

Dramatic Play -The children will be invited to explore the dramatic play center.  The teacher will point out where the props and dress-up clothes can be found in the dramatic play. The shelves and containers will be labeled with props and dress-up clothes for children to put away.

 

Blocks- The children will be invited to explore the blocks center.

The teacher will introduce wooden unit blocks (many sizes and shapes) and where they can be found. The shelves will be labeled with the unit blocks for students to find and put away.

 

Art- The children will be invited to explore the art center.

The teacher will be in the art center modeling how to use art materials and pointing where the materials below on the shelves.

 

Science- The children will be invited to explore the science center. The teacher will introduce natural objects (rocks, shells, and pinecones), and how to use magnifying glasses, and magnets. The shelves and containers will be labeled with the materials for students to put away.

 

Math- The children will be invited to explore the math center. The teacher will introduce various manipulatives. The teacher will show students where it can be found and how to put it away. 

 

Library-The children will be invited to explore the library center. The teacher will model how to turn the pages of a book and how to take good care of books.

 

Writing-The children will be invited students to explore the writing center. The teacher will introduce the tools in the writing center.

The shelves and containers will be labeled with the materials for students to put away.

 

Sensory-The children will be invited to explore the sensory center.

The teacher will introduce children to the tools in the writing center. The shelves and containers will be labeled with the materials for students to put away.

Parents remember to sign in and sign out your child at the front door, if someone else is dropping off or picking up your child please inform them of the procedures.

Kindly return all forms completed that were given at the beginning of the month.

Expressions

The children will be invited to the Science center.  The teacher will have a discussion with the students about emotions, she will ask them to consider when we might experience them and how to recognize them in others.

For children who need additional support: Children will explore fewer emotions.

For children who are ready for a challenge: Students will be asked to take turns making an expression and have the other children identify the expression or the students will be able to draw pictures of people making the expressions they are exploring.

ELL Students: The students will be given the directions in Spanish. A few names of emotions will be given in Spanish, and they will be used in conjunction with the pictures or while making expressions. 

Pre-K Common Core Learning Standard Addressed: PK.SEL.2 Recognizes self as an individual having unique abilities, characteristics, feelings, and interests.

What does the little girl's dad love? What is his passion?

Level 2: Skill/Concept

The little girl likes to look for shapes in the world around her. What shapes do you see in our classroom? The little girl says there are all sorts of things at school that could be her passion. For example, she tries dancing, cooking, singing. What are some of the things you have tried at school this year?

Level 3: Strategic Thinking

You shared that you tried __, __, and __ in pre-K this year. What did you like best? Why? How do you know if something is your passion?

Level 4: Extended Thinking

Do you think you have a passion? Why or why not? Do any of your family members or friends have a passion? How do you know?

Week of September 12th!

WEEKLY REMINDERS 

 

Please read all the reminders!!

   

·     PreK For All Classes 8:00 AM - 2:45 PM

·     Dismissal is at 2:45 PM

·     Please return all forms completed.

·     If you have registered your child in the After-School Program please let me know tomorrow morning. A reminder that the After-School Program is a tuition based program and parents will receive an invoice for payment from Smart Tuition beginning October 5th.

·     Parents are reminded to please sign in and sign out their children each and every day at the classroom door. If someone else is picking up the child please inform them of those regulations.

·     Please make sure your child has an extra change of clothes.

·     Please bring in a picture of your family for us to hang on our family tree!

Exploring the art center

The children will be invited to explore the art center. The teacher will be in the art center modeling how to use art materials (paint brush, paint, makers and watercolors) and point where the materials below on the shelve. 

 

Pre-K Common Core Learning Standard Addressed:

PK.AL.1 Actively engages in play as a means of exploration and learning.

 

 

For children who need additional support: 

The teacher will model how to use a paintbrush and paint, watercolors and markers on paper. The teacher will provide 1:1 support and repeat directions if the child/children struggles with the activity. 

 

For children who are ready for a challenge:The teacher will encourage children to think about what they should do after they finished painting or what other art materials they would like to explore. 

 

 

ELL Students: The students will be given the directions in Spanish. The words watercolors, markers, paintbrush, paint and paper will be emphasized when introducing how to use the materials.
