Unit Topic: My Five Senses
Essential Question for the Unit:
How
do we use our senses to explore, investigate and understand the world around
us?
Focus Question for the Week Related to the Text:
How
do we use our sense of touch?
Focused
Learning Activity for the Week:
👐 Touch Scavenger Hunt
Activity
Procedure:
Children will be asked to warm up their fingers. They will be invited to wiggle them, stretch them and get them ready to go hunting for things in the classroom. The teacher will provide two contrasting materials; children will be asked to close their eyes, touch the materials and describe how they feel. Children will be encouraged to find things in the classroom that feel a certain way. The teacher will tell children what to look for ; they may walk around the room and use their fingers to find something that matches the texture for which the teacher is looking for .
For
children who need additional support:
Children who may be uncomfortable touching items of various textures will be paired with someone who is comfortable. The other child touches the surface and explains how it feels. If children are not able to locate the suggested textures in the classroom then items of various textures will be provided in a feely box for children to explore.
For
children who are ready for a challenge:
Children who need a challenge will be paired with a child who is struggling to find appropriate textures in the classroom or is uncomfortable touching items of various textures. The child will be invited to be the teacher and suggest textures for the teacher or peers to find in the classroom.
English
Language Learners (ELL’s)
The teacher will scaffold language by using contrasting descriptors: hard and soft, for example. Teacher will say, “This is hard” and have children feel a hard object. The teacher will model, “This is soft,” and have them feel a soft object. Children will feel objects in partners and practice saying the words “hard” and “soft.” The activity will continue with other contrasting descriptors such as “smooth/bumpy,” etc.
